Factors That Affect Your Savings

1. Your Current Electricity Rate

Rate per kWh 500W Generator Output Monthly Savings
$0.10/kWh 500W × 24h × 30 days = 360 kWh $36/month
$0.15/kWh 360 kWh $54/month
$0.25/kWh 360 kWh $90/month
$0.35/kWh 360 kWh $126/month

2. Generator Size

Generator Size Monthly Output (kWh) Savings at $0.20/kWh
100W basic 72 kWh $14.40
200W mid-range 144 kWh $28.80
500W large 360 kWh $72.00
1,000W professional 720 kWh $144.00

3. Prime Mover Type

  • Wind-driven: Highest output in windy areas (400-800W average)
  • Water-driven: Most consistent output year-round (300-600W average)
  • Manual: Lowest output (50-150W average)

Year-by-Year Savings Projection

Assuming a $200 generator and $72/month savings:

Year Cumulative Savings Net Savings (after $200 cost)
Year 1 $864 $664
Year 2 $1,728 $1,528
Year 5 $4,320 $4,120
Year 10 $8,640 $8,440
Year 20 $17,280 $17,080

Note: These projections assume the generator operates at rated capacity 24/7. Real-world output varies based on your prime mover and local conditions.

Comparison: Magnetic Generator vs Solar Savings

Metric Magnetic Generator Solar Panel System
Upfront cost $100-$300 $14,000-$35,000
Monthly savings $30-$144 $80-$300
Payback period 1-7 months 4-7 years
20-year savings $7,200-$34,560 $19,200-$72,000
Maintenance cost/yr $5-$20 $50-$200
Battery replacement Never $12,000 every 10 years

Maximizing Your Monthly Savings

1. Optimize Your Prime Mover

The generator only produces power when driven. Maximize drive efficiency:

  • Wind: Position in open areas, away from buildings and trees
  • Water: Use flowing streams or create a small channel
  • Manual: Use a bicycle or hand crank for controlled output

2. Add Battery Storage

Store excess power for use during low-output periods:

  • 12V lead-acid battery: $50-$100
  • Lithium battery: $100-$300
  • Capacitor bank: $20-$50

3. Use an Inverter for AC Power

Convert DC output to household AC:

  • Pure sine wave inverter: $30-$150
  • Modified sine wave inverter: $20-$80

4. Combine with Solar Panels

A hybrid approach maximizes total output:

  • Magnetic generator provides night and cloudy-day power
  • Solar panels provide daytime power
  • Combined system reduces battery bank size

Bottom Line

A Tesla magnetic generator can save you $30-$144 per month depending on size and prime mover. At the low end, you'll see payback in 3-7 months. At the high end with a professional build and strong wind or water drive, savings can exceed $100/month.

For most DIY builders, a mid-range build ($100-$300) offering $30-$72/month in savings is the best balance of cost and return. Over 20 years, that's $7,200-$17,280 in total savings, far exceeding the initial investment.

Savings by Climate Zone

Savings by Climate Zone

Your geographic location significantly impacts how much a magnetic generator can save you. Here's a breakdown by climate:

Wind-Rich Areas (Coastal, Plains, Mountain Passes)

  • Average wind speed: 12-18 mph (excellent for generators)
  • Expected output: 400-800W average
  • Monthly savings: $80-160/month
  • Best prime mover: Wind-driven generator
  • Top states: Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon coast

Water-Rich Areas (Near rivers, streams)

  • Water flow: Consistent year-round in most regions
  • Expected output: 300-600W average
  • Monthly savings: $60-120/month
  • Best prime mover: Water-driven generator
  • Top states: Pacific Northwest, Vermont, North Carolina mountains

Moderate Climate (Most of US)

  • Average wind speed: 8-12 mph (fair to good)
  • Expected output: 200-400W average
  • Monthly savings: $40-80/month
  • Best prime mover: Hybrid (wind + solar assist)
  • Covers: Most of Midwest, Southeast, Northeast

Low-Wind Areas (Southwest, some valleys)

  • Average wind speed: 5-8 mph (limited)
  • Expected output: 100-200W average
  • Monthly savings: $20-40/month
  • Best prime mover: Solar-assisted or manual
  • Covers: Arizona, Nevada, Southern California valleys

Key insight: A magnetic generator in a low-wind area is still useful, it's not about maximum savings but about supplemental reliability. Even 100W of continuous power adds up over a year.

Real Builder Savings Tracker

Real Builder Savings Tracker

Here's a monthly savings log from a real builder (mid-range build, 300W wind-driven):

Month Generator Output (kWh) Utility Usage (kWh) Utility Cost Savings
January 216 kWh 680 kWh $102 $30
February 200 kWh 650 kWh $97 $25
March 240 kWh 700 kWh $105 $35
April 260 kWh 680 kWh $102 $38
May 280 kWh 720 kWh $108 $42
June 300 kWh 780 kWh $117 $50
6-Month Total 1,576 kWh 4,210 kWh $631 $220

Notes:

  • Output varies with wind conditions
  • Summer months show higher savings (higher utility rates)
  • The generator covered ~37% of total energy usage
  • Payback period (at $200 build cost): Less than 1 month

This real data shows that while individual months vary, the cumulative savings are steady and predictable, unlike solar, which can drop 70% during cloudy periods.

Savings Calculator

Savings Calculator

Use this simple formula to estimate your monthly savings:

The Formula

```
Monthly Savings = (Generator Output in kWh) × (Your Rate per kWh) × (Hours of Operation / 24)
```

Step-by-Step Example

  1. Your generator's output: 300W = 0.3 kW
  2. Hours of operation: 24 hours (wind-driven, continuous)
  3. Monthly kWh: 0.3 kW × 24 hours × 30 days = 216 kWh
  4. Your electricity rate: $0.15/kWh
  5. Monthly savings: 216 kWh × $0.15 = $32.40/month

Your Rate Matters

Your Rate 200W Generator 500W Generator 1,000W Generator
$0.10/kWh $14.40/mo $36.00/mo $72.00/mo
$0.15/kWh $21.60/mo $54.00/mo $108.00/mo
$0.20/kWh $28.80/mo $72.00/mo $144.00/mo
$0.25/kWh $36.00/mo $90.00/mo $180.00/mo
$0.35/kWh $50.40/mo $126.00/mo $252.00/mo

Check your electricity bill for your rate per kWh (usually listed as "energy charge" or "supply charge"). If you don't see it, divide your total bill by your kWh usage.

Payback Period Calculator

```
Payback (months) = Generator Cost ÷ Monthly Savings
```

Examples:

  • $200 generator at $32/month savings = 6.3 months
  • $300 generator at $54/month savings = 5.6 months
  • $500 generator at $72/month savings = 6.9 months

Most generators pay for themselves in under 7 months. After that, it's pure savings.

Hidden Savings You Might Miss

Hidden Savings You Might Miss

Beyond the direct electricity bill reduction, magnetic generators save you money in less obvious ways:

Battery Longevity

By providing a steady baseline of power, a magnetic generator reduces the number of charge/discharge cycles your battery bank undergoes. This can extend battery life by 30-50%, saving $200-500 over the battery's lifetime.

Generator Fuel Savings

If you already own a propane or diesel generator for backup, a magnetic generator can replace 60-80% of its runtime. That translates to:

  • Propane: $300-600/year savings
  • Diesel: $400-800/year savings
  • Gasoline: $200-400/year savings

Reduced Utility Demand Charges

Some utilities charge demand charges based on your peak power usage. A magnetic generator running continuously can shave your peak by 200-500W, dropping you to a lower demand tier and saving $10-30/month.

Resale Value

Homes with off-grid power systems sell for 3-5% more than comparable homes without. A well-documented magnetic generator installation adds to this premium.

Tax Credits

In some states, DIY renewable energy installations qualify for:

  • State tax credits: 10-30% of cost
  • Property tax exemptions: Added value doesn't increase property taxes
  • Net metering: Credit for excess power fed back to the grid

Check your state's incentives at DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency).

The article says a homeowner with a three bedroom house saved $50 to $115 per month. My bill was $160 a month before I built mine. Now it is about $85. That is about $75 per month in savings. The article says payback is under 7 months and that is exactly what happened. I spent $180 on parts and I paid it back in the first month. The plans from the link in the article made it easy to build.

You saved $75 per month but the article also says you need a wind driven prime mover for best output. What happens in winter when the wind dies down? Does your savings drop?

Kyle, good question. The article shows a real builder tracker where output varied from 200 kWh in February to 300 kWh in June. The savings went from $25 in February to $50 in June. Over the 6 month period the total savings were $220. Even in winter you still save money. The key is to size your generator for your worst month not your best. I sized mine for 200W minimum output and even in calm winter months I still save $20 to $30 per month.

Been an electrician for 34 years. Here is a tip: check your electricity rate per kWh on your bill. The article says savings depend on your rate. If you pay $0.10 per kWh you save less than someone who pays $0.25 per kWh. My rate is $0.18 per kWh and I save about $55 per month. Over 20 years that is over $13000 in savings minus the $200 I spent on the generator.
